Festival Study: Audience development in new music, Kultur i Väst/Resurs Ny Musik RNM (2014)

Resurs Ny Musik (Resource New Music) is a new networking forum for audience development in contemporary music in the Swedish region of  Västra Götaland. A study being conducted in 2014 seeks to investigate how audience development work is shaped by some of Sweden’s main festivals in this genre – New Directions (Piteå/Luleå), Sound of Stockholm (Stockholm), Gothenburg Art Sounds/GAS-festivalen (Gothenburg), GEIGER (Gothenburg) and Kalvfestivalen (Kalv).

The aim of the study is to

  • initiate a learning process in the area of audience development
  • create a common conceptual world
  • provide a forum for exchanging experiences
  • establish networks for promoting discussions about the role of audience development in festival organisation work
  • identify good examples and possible pitfalls
  • act as a starter project for a regional centre for audience development

The study will result in a publication that will serve as the basis for a workshop to be held in conjunction with the GAS Festival on October 15 2014. The target audience is contemporary music festivals and event organisers in the fields of music and sound art.
